SUMMARY:Beyond Pink Summit: Uplifting Girl* Voice!
DESCRIPTION:Registration has officially opened for the 9th annual Beyond Pink Summit: Uplifting Girl* Voice!\, hosted by the Justice for Girls Coalition of Washington State on Wednesday\, November 15th. \nThis digital event is FREE to attend and we strongly encourage all girl*-advocates to join. This year\, our keynote speaker\, Dr. Nina Walker\, will speak on the topic of sex trafficking prevention by centering the voices of Black girls*. Her presentation will be in the morning section of the day (between 9a-11a). \nSee more details below and email Tristan Eddy at justiceforgirls.wa@gmail.com with any questions. \nDr. Nina Walker (she/her/hers) is the founder of RAGOH Speaks LLC\, an educational and research consultancy focused on combating the disproportionate exploitation of Black girls through sex trafficking and equipping schools/communities to play a role in prevention. She has spent two decades fostering restorative and healing-centered spaces for marginalized youth\, especially Black and Brown girls. Her interdisciplinary lens stems from a dynamic career as a school counselor\, outpatient therapist\, nonprofit founder\, researcher\, educational consultant\, and professor. Through all these experiences\, amplifying the voices of Black and Brown girls drives her to partner with schools and organizations to recognize the power and brilliance inherent in every young person. Schools have the opportunity to be amazingly protective and empowering spaces in the lives of young people\, and Dr. Walker continues to partner with schools\, youth-serving organizations and communities in achieving just that. \nDr. Walker’s Keynote “Do You Hear Us? Centering the Voices of Black Girls in the Fight Against Sex Trafficking” draws from her two decades as an advocate in many roles and her doctoral research and will illuminate the intersection of injustices faced by Black girls\, with a paramount focus on schools engaging in trafficking prevention through centering their voices and sharing their journeys through the educational and societal systems. Our shared endeavor during this talk will be to lean in and listen to their voices\, affirming their humanity in confronting one of the most pressing crises of our time and striving for a world where justice for Black girls is not just a dream\, but a reality. \n  \nClick HERE to register for Beyond Pink 9! \n  \n*’Girl’ refers to any youth who identifies as female

SUMMARY:World Refugee Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Every year on World Refugee Day (June 20th)\, we’re focused on telling the stories of refugees—of people beyond numbers—and showing the power of welcoming refugees. World Refugee Day 2023 is an effort to invite the world to see celebrate and honor refugees and immigrants from all over the world. \nIRC’s goal is to change the narrative of refugees that is typically portrayed—with refugees telling their own stories on how they want to be seen or heard\, and showing the world their hopes\, dreams\, and values. Refugees are multi-dimensional human beings—more than the label of a refugee and not defined by their displacement.. \n  \nOn this special day\, we want to celebrate with refugee families and welcome them into our community. Bring your families\, friends\, and loved ones\, and a celebratory attitude. This in-person event will take place in the cafeteria and the courtyard of the high school. \nIf you’re interested in attending as guest\, RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Community Celebration
DESCRIPTION:King County is proud to partner with Gifts of Hope to bring to the community its “Juneteenth Family Reunion.” \nThe community celebration will be held on Sunday\, June 11\, 2023 from noon to 4:30 p.m. at the Smilow Rainier Vist Boys & Girls Club\, 4520 MLK Jr. Way S.\, Seattle\, WA 98108. \nIn November 2020\, the King County Council voted to make Juneteenth a paid holiday for
employees beginning in 2022. \nJuneteenth commemorates June 19\, 1865\, when the enslaved people of African descent in Galveston\, Texas\, were told – more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation – they were free people. Even though people continued to be held in slavery after that date\, June 19 is the day the African American community has historically observed as the end of legal slavery in this country. It has been celebrated with events and activities in the week leading up to the holiday. \nPlease consider this as your invitation to join the community in celebration of Juneteenth with music\, food\, and vendors featuring local Black businesses. This event also includes a free vaccination and dental clinic. This family-friendly celebration will include a kids play zone and a powerful and enlightening educational experience through Mr. Delbert Richardson’s Traveling African American Museum. \nOur partner this year\, Gifts of Hope is a community-based organization serving youth and families with resources and opportunities to transform lives. This nonprofit is focused on rebuilding communities through impactful programs and assistance such as back-to-school assistance\, rental assistance\, transitional programs for at-risk youth\, and more. Learn more about their programs at their website givinggiftsofhope.org. \nEach of us can honor Juneteenth in our own way\, from attending a Juneteenth event\, donating time to volunteer\, or dedicating time to learn more about Juneteenth and the continued legacy of slavery in this country.
